When this photo was taken on March 4, 1865, the 16th president had less than six weeks to live. He's the tall, hatless fellow almost exactly in the center holding his speech.

-- Andrew Malcolm

If Obama and Biden registered here for cellphone alerts to each new Ticket item, they wouldn't be late for their own swearing-in ceremony come Jan. 20. RSS feeds are also available here. And we're on Amazon's Kindle now too.

Official Schedule for the Inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama, Jan. 20, 2009:

The ceremony will commence at 7 a.m. Pacific on the west front of the U.S. Capitol and will include:

• Musical Selections: The United States Marine Band, followed by The San Francisco Boys Chorus and the San Francisco Girls Chorus.

• Call to Order and Welcoming Remarks: Senator Dianne Feinstein.

• Invocation: Dr. Rick Warren.

• Musical Selection: Aretha Franklin.

• Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden, Jr. will be sworn into office by Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, the Honorable John Paul Stevens.

• Musical Selection: John Williams, composer/arranger with Itzhak Perlman, (violin), Yo-Yo Ma (cello), Gabriela Montero (piano) and Anthony McGill (clarinet).

• President-elect Barack Hussein Obama will take the Oath of Office, using President Lincoln’s Inaugural Bible, administered by the Chief Justice of the United States, the Honorable John G. Roberts, Jr.

• Inaugural Address.

• Poem: Elizabeth Alexander.

• Benediction: The Reverend Dr. Joseph E. Lowery.

• The National Anthem: The United States Navy Band “Sea Chanters”

After President Obama gives his Inaugural Address, he will escort outgoing President George W. Bush to a departure ceremony before attending a luncheon in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall. The 56th Inaugural Parade will then make its way down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House with groups traveling from all over the country to participate.
Later that day, the Presidential Inaugural Committee will host 10 official Inaugural Balls. More details about those affairs will be released at a later date.

source :
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/12/obama-inaugur-3.html

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://richiezone.blogspot.com/2009/01/official-schedule-for-barack-h-obamas.html' title='Official schedule for Barack H. "And you have the sea front, where the US could possibly play a bigger role."

But while the deal would give Israel more leverage at the negotiating table with the Palestinians, without more engagement from Egypt, it would not be a practical solution, he said.

source :
As citizens of our individual countries, we at times become extremely frustrated by the policies of our governments that we deem unjust. We oftentimes feel powerless to change them as more and more of the governments and the politicians who run them become increasingly subservient to global corporate and banking interests. There is, however, one powerful weapon that if utilized collectively can accomplish far greater positive change than marches, protests and demonstrations. The weapon is the boycott of well targeted products. Mexican-American labor leader Cesar Chavez utilized this weapon with great success against the greedy grape growers of Alta California and managed to win many concessions for the exploited farmworkers. The boycott of grapes would not have been successful, however, if the world community did not support it.

Today, as the world community begins to see evidence of the barbaric massacre of Palestinians that took place in Jenin by the Butcher Ariel Sharon and his murderous Zionist Army, one is compelled to just and moral action. Here in Aztlan, we have become extremely frustrated at President George Bush and his inability or unwillingness to stop the horrible slaughter that is occurring in the Holy Land and that may culminate in the genocide of the Palestinian people. We individually have the power of choice to buy one product over another or to simply forgo a purchase entirely. If more and more people around the world do the same, the pressure will become powerful enough to force a positive change. We each can also help by asking our family members and friends to do the same.

Below are products and brands of corporations and businesses that are helping Ariel Sharon and Zionist Israel to continue their racist apartheid policies and illegal occupation of Palestinian lands. We are asking you to boycott these products. The products and brands have been well researched. Each of the companies have ties to Israel and support their policies against the Palestinian people. As an example, Estée Lauder's chairman, Ronald Lauder, served as the Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and is the current President of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) - a quasi-governmental agency whose main function is to legitimize Israeli occupation of Palestinian land. Ronald Lauder is a hardcore Zionist and his views are often more extreme then those of the Israeli government.

Other examples are:

KIMBERLY-CLARK
In 1998 Mr. Robert P. Van der Merwe, chairman of Kimberly-Clark Europe received the Jubilee Award by the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. This is the highest tribute ever awarded by the "State of Israel" in recognition of those individuals and organizations, that through their investments and trade relationships, have done the most to strengthen the Israeli economy.

COCA-COLA
From 1966 onward Coca-Cola has been a staunch supporter of Israel. Recently the Government of Israel Economic Mission honored Coca-Cola at the Israel Trade Award Dinner for its continued support of Israel for the last 30 years and for refusing to abide by the Arab League boycott of Israel.

NESTLE
Swiss food giant Nestle will set up a global research and development center for snack foods next year in Sderot, a town in Israel's Negev desert, the Maariv newspaper reported on Sunday. Nestle owns 50.1 percent of Israeli food maker Osem Investments and the two together produce snack foods at a plant in Sderot.

INTEL
Intel is one of the biggest supporters of Israel. Their very first development center outside the US was opened in Haifa in 1974. Since then they have continued pouring investment in to Israel. By year 2000 they employed over 4000 Israelis. Exports from their Lachish-Qiryat Gat plant in israel total $3 million a day at peak capacity - approximately $ 1 billion a year. The Intel plant at "Qiryat Gat" is built on land Israel confiscated from the Palestinian villages of Iraq al Manshiya. Iraq al Manshiya was a village of 2000 people living in 300 houses with two mosques and one school. The original Palestinian inhabitants were terrorized out of the village and then the whole village was razed to the ground to prepare the way for the new Israeli settlement of Qiryat Gat. Today the remaining population from Iraq al Manshiya is still not allowed to return.

SARA LEE
In 1998, Mr. Lucien Nessim of Sara Lee Personal Products received the Jubilee Award by the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. This is the highest tribute ever awarded by the "State of Israel" in recognition of those individuals and organizations, that through their investments and trade relationships, have done the most to strengthen the Israeli economy

DISNEY
The Disney Company is owned by Jewish Mogul Michael Eisner. He owns a vast media empire that includes the ABC television network, numerous news dailies, national magazines, Hollywood film companies and a large number of radio stations. One radio station in Los Angeles, KABC 790 AM recently broadcast comments by Jewess Gloria Alred to the effect that the Islamic prisoners at Guantanamo should be tortured by having their "balls" extracted with pliers in order to make them talk. The news and commentaries made through Michael Eisner's media octopus are extremely Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian.

source :
http://home.pacbell.net

Sevilla's Kanouté: 'No Problems' With Palestine Fine

<img style="display:block; Also, because of the collapse of the phone system many families are not informed of the death of a relative for days.
In the past three days the Israel Defense Forces has held a three hour unilateral ceasefire each day allowing rescue forces to clear dead bodies buried beneath rubble. Dozens of bodies were evacuated from the Zeitoun neighborhood on Wednesday and Thursday. For five days, nearly 120 civilians were not allowed by the IDF to leave the area.

For many, the afternoon lulls in the fighting were an opportunity to bathe for the first time in two weeks. Families of up to 30 or 40 people have taken refuge in apartments with only three or four rooms. Residents of the Jabalia and Shati refugee camps, affiliated with both Hamas and Fatah, worked together to provide blankets and food to people who fled their homes closer to the fighting.

Food shortages have been reported, mostly in more isolated refugee camps such as Nusirat. Occasional water shortages are said to be even more serious. In the past two days, electricity was restored for a few hours in some of Gaza's neighborhoods, allowing water to be pumped to the top floors after being out for about a week.

Palestinians complain explosions are constantly heard as are the constant movement of tanks on the ground and planes and drones in the sky.

In the Gazan neighborhood of Tel Hawa, which is home to the Doghmush clan that held British journalist Alan Johnston, local residents stayed in their homes hoping not to be caught in the crossfire. The former photographer of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was killed, along with his wife and her mother, when a missile struck their apartment.

Many Palestinians have started telling jokes to help them get through the hard times. Saturday a Palestinians man named Mustafa retold a joke given to him by his 17-year-old son Basal.

"One Hebron resident tells another that every missile fired by the Israelis costs 100,000 dollars." Mustafa said: "The man replied: 'He's lucky to have such an expensive commodity fall on him from the sky.'"

source :
http://www.haaretz.com

Gaza medics say death toll in offensive over 1,000

GAZA, Jan 14 (Reuters) - The number of Palestinians killed in a 19-day-old Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip reached at least 1,000 on Wednesday, including hundreds of civilians, officials in the Hamas-run Health Ministry in the enclave said.

The figures, in common with previous counts, are subject to the difficulties of counting and verification in the chaos of the war. Israeli officials have given no firm casualty toll for Palestinians but say troops have killed hundreds of militants.

At least 10 people, including at least four militants, were killed on Wednesday, medics said. Bodies were also retrieved from past attacks. It took the total death toll to 1,010, said Muawiyah Hassanein, head of the ministry's ambulance service.

The Gaza-based Palestinian Center for Human Rights said it had compiled figures showing 673 civilians had died since Israel launched its air campaign on Dec. 27. These included 225 children and 69 women. Earlier this week, the health ministry said about 400 women and children were among the dead.

More than half Gaza's 1.5 million people are aged under 18.

In the first days of the war, hundreds of Hamas members were killed in air strikes. Israel regards all of these as militants, although some argue that many were police officers whose main functions were civilian.

Israel says it has lost nine soldiers in a ground offensive that began on Jan. 3, four of these to "friendly fire", while a 10th soldier and three Israeli civilians were killed by Hamas rockets fired into southern Israel in the first week of the war.

Israel says it launched the offensive to halt rocket fire that had killed 18 people between 2001 and the start of the air campaign. The conflict showed no signs of ending as diplomats reported little progress in negotiating a cease-fire.

The Israeli officials said their strategy was to squeeze Hamas militarily as they try to pressure the Islamist movement into a truce that would include a long-term commitment to stop firing rockets into southern Israel. Some Hamas leaders have said they are willing to cut a deal, but others have pledged to continue fighting.

Despite public vows by Israeli politicians to destroy Hamas's military capability, Israeli officials said Tuesday that the movement had lost only a fraction of its fighters and retained a large stockpile of rockets and other armaments. A "few hundred" Hamas fighters have been killed, out of a total force of 15,000, according to a senior Israeli military official.

In a briefing for foreign journalists, the senior official said Hamas still has hundreds of rockets and other missiles. "We do not see where they have a shortage of personnel to fight," the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was discussing intelligence matters.

Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, the Israeli military chief of staff, said Gaza had been pummeled by more than 2,300 airstrikes since the war began Dec. 27. "We have achieved a lot in hitting Hamas and its infrastructure, its rule and its armed wing, but there is still work ahead," he told the Israeli parliament Tuesday.
ad_icon

For the past several days, Israeli forces have edged closer to Gaza City and other urban centers where Hamas is strongest, but they have held back from an all-out confrontation. Military officials said the goal was to force Hamas into a diplomatic settlement by gradually increasing pressure on the battlefield.

"The issue is, will Hamas agree to stop the firing of rockets into Israel, something they've been doing for eight years?" the senior official said. "This is what we are going after."

Hamas leaders, however, have been split on how to respond. Officials from Gaza have said they are willing to negotiate as long as Israel agrees to withdraw its forces and re-open border crossings that Israel and Egypt closed after Hamas seized exclusive control of the territory in June 2007.

"It is our duty to end the suffering of the Palestinian people," Ghazi Hamid, a Hamas spokesman, told al-Jazeera television Tuesday. "We need to be sure that Israel will respect the cease-fire and not target Gaza again."

But Hamas leaders in exile in Syria have taken a harder line, and it is unclear who is calling the shots.

On Tuesday, Hamas emissaries met in Cairo with Omar Suleiman, Egypt's intelligence chief, who has brokered the negotiations. No breakthroughs were reported. Suleiman later accompanied Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to meet with Saudi King Abdullah as Arab leaders tried to coordinate a regional strategy for ending the conflict.

Israel announced that it would send an emissary, Defense Ministry official Amos Gilad, to Cairo on Thursday. Egypt is overseeing the talks in part because Israel refuses to speak directly with Hamas, which it considers a terrorist organization. Israel is also trying to persuade Egypt to accept an international force to help patrol its side of the Gazan border, something officials in Cairo have been reluctant to do.

Israel and Hamas have both rejected a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for an immediate and "durable" cease-fire. On Tuesday, U.N. General Secretary Ban Ki-moon left New York for the Middle East. He is scheduled to visit Egypt, Syria and Jordan in a bid to end the diplomatic impasse.

In Washington, the State Department used unusually strong language Tuesday to deny a claim by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that he personally persuaded President Bush to order that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice abstain on the resolution, which she had negotiated.

Olmert's claim is "wholly inaccurate as to describing the situation, just 100 percent, totally, completely not true," spokesman Sean McCormack said. He said Rice had recommended that the United States abstain.

Israeli military officials said they have focused their combat operations in recent days on the northern part of the Gaza Strip, especially in the suburbs around Gaza City.

Health officials in Gaza said about 960 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, more than half of them civilians. Thirteen Israelis have died, including 10 soldiers. The three others were civilians struck by Hamas rockets.

Israeli military officials said Tuesday that the war has weakened popular support for Hamas in Gaza, which prompted the movement's officials there to send delegates to Cairo for the cease-fire talks. "Their leadership in the Gaza Strip feels the pressure and feels a need to stop the fighting," the senior military official said.

But many Gaza residents interviewed Tuesday predicted that Hamas would bolster its appeal in the long term by standing up to the Israelis. "This crisis was created by Israel and it will create more hatred toward Israel," said Mohamed Ali, 39, a resident of Gaza City. "Who has killed all of our people? Not Hamas. Israel."

While some people expressed anger at Hamas for engaging Israeli soldiers in residential areas, others said the guerrillas had no choice.

"They were born among the people and came from the people," said Tamir Mansour, 35, a clerk at a Gaza City medical clinic. "Gaza is a very narrow, very congested place. We don't have separate camps for the fighters and separate camps for civilians."

Staff writer Glenn Kessler in Washington and special correspondent Reyham Abdel Kareem in Gaza City contributed to this report.

source :
http://www.washingtonpost.com

Gaza Is the Future

Israel's on a rampage – and here's why

by Justin Raimondo

Why is Israel pounding Gaza? Well, we know the official explanation, which goes something like this: if you Americans were being targeted by crude, albeit potentially lethal, rockets from, say, Mexico, on a daily basis, how would you respond? Israel, we are told, had to take on Hamas. As Barack Obama put it, while campaigning in Sderot, the Israeli response is "part of being a country." They had no choice.

This is bollocks, as everyone but the brain-dead realize. To begin with, Hamas offered a truce and had abided by the previous cease-fire, but the Israelis weren't interested. Instead, Tel Aviv chose to unleash what the whole world sees as an appallingly disproportionate response, raining death on one of the most tightly packed urban environments on earth and launching what looks to be an invasion and reoccupation of the Gaza Strip.

Of course, any military action by the IDF against Hamas' ragtag fighters is inherently disproportionate, given the radical imbalance in the power relationship between the two. Israel, after all, has the most effective, high-tech military machine in the region, bought and paid for by U.S. taxpayers – and with no expense spared on account of that. In any case, however, many are puzzled by what seems to be an inherently doomed project. The attack will merely popularize Hamas, without changing anything, and Israel will wind up back at square one, caught in a Sisyphean nightmare of constantly re-invading the same territory, then retreating once again. But what if they don't retreat?

The assumption that this is an overreaction to the pinpricks inflicted by Hamas is flat-out wrong: the current conflict, which is escalating rapidly, has zero to do with a few rockets lobbed over Israel's impregnable perimeter. That was merely a pretext, and a thin one at that. Yet the exhibition of such a reckless disregard for truth and world opinion hints at the real agenda at work here and underscores the arrogance underlying it.

If we step back and look at Israel's strategy in recent years, the Gaza reoccupation – or, at least, regime-change in Hamastan – makes perfect sense. Sharon's was a tactical retreat: one small step backward, to be followed by a couple of giant steps forward. Lebanon's recent agony was step one. The Gaza massacre is step two. The third is anyone's guess. Syria? Lebanon, again? Kurdistan might be fun.

No one knows, of course, but the general outlines of what is going down, as we say in America, were laid out in "A Clean Break: A New Strategy for the Realm," a policy paper produced by a remarkable group of American analysts in 1996, for then-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The realm being Israel, and the unique group that produced it characterized by their centrality in pushing for war with Iraq. Led by Richard Perle, the "Clean Break" group consisted of James Colbert, Charles Fairbanks Jr., Douglas Feith, Robert Loewenberg, David Wurmser, and Meyrav Wurmser.

All of these august personages, but especially Perle, can claim the dubious credit of having co-authored what the late Gen. William E. Odom ruefully referred to as the greatest military disaster in American history. While Perle is now wailing over at The National Interest that he had nothing to do with it, that it was all George W. Bush's fault, neither history nor the gods will absolve him. He and his fellow graduates of the Scoop Jackson Academy and Finishing School for Laptop Bombardiers are so on the record as being the earliest and most vociferous advocates of regime-change throughout the Middle East, and not just Iraq, that their denials of responsibility are a veritable pastiche of mendacity. Surely they jest.

Yet they just as surely were not jesting in "A Clean Break," where the case is made that Israel is in a rut: Israel is endangered by an inability to break out of its settler-colony isolation, and, in the process, renew the Zionist project internationally. While no mention is made of the demographic time-bomb, it can be clearly heard ticking in the background. A new aggressiveness is called for, the Perle group argued, a clean break with the passivity of the past. They recommended a policy of regime-change throughout the immediate vicinity of Israel:

"Israel can shape its strategic environment, in cooperation with Turkey and Jordan, by weakening, containing, and even rolling back Syria. This effort can focus on removing Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq – an important Israeli strategic objective in its own right – as a means of foiling Syria's regional ambitions."

Perle and Co. urged Netanyahu to strike out in every direction. First, go north, they advised:

"Syria challenges Israel on Lebanese soil. An effective approach, and one with which Americans can sympathize, would be if Israel seized the strategic initiative along its northern borders by engaging Hezbollah, Syria, and Iran, as the principal agents of aggression in Lebanon."

Syria is deemed the penultimate prize, a ripe apple waiting to fall from the tree. All that's required is a little vigorous shaking. Lurking behind these dominoes, however, is Israel's chief antagonist, Iran, the current target of the Israel lobby's campaign to gin up yet another war in the Middle East.

All these scenarios have played out, and quite recently, in rapid succession. Reading "A Clean Break," one might almost be scanning today's headlines. This is more than mere prescience: these are policymakers, not college professors, we're talking about. Nearly all of them were central players in the foreign policy councils of the past administration. All are exemplars of the neoconservative network, a camarilla of pro-Israel ideologues that has wreaked such havoc in eight years that it may take 800 more before we recover.

A central pillar of neoconservative dogma is its passionate attachment – as George Washington would put it – to what it perceives as Israel's national interests. "A Clean Break" contains an undertone of hostility to the U.S., which is seen as being put in an impossible position of mediating between irreconcilable foes. U.S. "intervention" in internal Israeli affairs is subtly bemoaned, and this fits in nicely with the theme of economic independence and a phasing out of economic aid – although they aren't quite ready to give up military aid until such time as Israel's armaments supply can be assured. In any case, the clear implication of all this is to reduce U.S. influence and allow the Israelis to unleash their full military power in a bid to "shape the regional environment in ways that grant Israel the room to refocus its energies back to where they are most needed."

Elbow room – or Lebensraum?

Of course, any war Israel involves itself in will drag in the United States, its principal patron and protector. In this, America is truly an empire of unique type – one that has been taken hostage by one of its own satellites. That, at least, is the intention, and, so far, the plan seems to be working.

The endgame is a general war against Israel's principal enemy in the region: Iran. The Lobby is already gearing up to make the new president miserable until he finally caves. What we have to look forward to in the next four years is lots of aggressive "diplomacy," to be followed by even more draconian economic sanctions and the looming threat of war.

Israel is following the "Clean Break" plan almost to the letter, shedding its old role as a dependent settler-colony under continuous siege. In Gaza – and, be assured, throughout the Middle East – Israel is asserting its new role as regional hegemon in a multi-polar world. Israel, not the U.S., is taking the initiative and leading its great ally and "protector" around by the nose, with the Lobby serving as an effective rein on any sudden spasms of self-interest.

This can only end in one way: a general war, perhaps a world war, pitting the U.S. and Israel against virtually every nation in the region – in effect, the entire Muslim world. A new Hundred Years War, a molten eruption of religious conflict that reaches into every continent and smolders for generations until the last embers of hatred and memory are cooled. A century of escalating terrorism and devastating war: is this what the American people want?

Well, no, but the past eight years have been an object lesson in how easily people can be bamboozled into something they most definitely do not want. It can – and doubtless will – happen again. Indeed, the pattern is repeating itself with the new administration, and Obama hasn't even taken the oath of office.

Look at Gaza and see the future. Then go out and do something about it.

source :

http://www.antiwar.com/

ISRAEL – PALESTINE

Israel and Hamas trade threats: suicide attacks against destruction
by Joshua Lapide

Tzipi Livni and Netanyahu include the removal of Hamas from power in their election platform. He had blond hair. He had blue eyes. Nobody knew who he was. Those who knew who him had seen him in movies like Road to Perdition where he played the psychotic son of a hit man or Sylvia, in which he played a poet. Whatever Craig was, the fans of Bond felt, he wasn’t the ideal man for the job.
Kowal explains it this way: “I think there’s a security and comfort to predictability, particularly for a new customer. You may sometimes have to change your product to attract new customers, but people like some sense of consistency, and that’s why they’ve managed to change the actor six times. They’ve made changes, but they’ve made them well, embracing consistency.
"I think there’s a certain way we want our products to perform—as promised," Kowal adds. "It’s created by advertising, word of mouth, and our previous interactions with them. If Alka-Seltzer’s formula was changed where it had the same effect on someone and maybe even cured a headache or indigestion better than before but it didn’t fizz, it wouldn’t be Alka-Seltzer.”
Casino Royale, arguably, has become a hit because while the formula was tinkered with, the movie and the character still delivered what audiences have come to expect and love from the films.
Business Lesson #5: Understand the art of the business deal. When Bond is strapped down to a table and about to be done in by an industrial laser in Goldfinger, his arch enemy suggests, “Choose your next witticism carefully, Mr. Bond. It may be your last.”
“Do you expect me to talk?” Bond asks, visibly nervous but not so much that he isn’t going to strike up a bargain.
“No, I expect you to die,” says Goldfinger.
Then Bond brings up “Operation Grand Slam” and suggests that not only does he know too much, but perhaps his colleagues do, too, and maybe it would be better to keep him alive. Goldfinger agrees, and Bond is saved. This negotiating is something you see in just about every film, to some degree. Bond needs something and has to leverage what he has--whether that's information or exploiting a competitor’s weakness--to make progress towards his goal.
Business leaders do the same thing every day, too, although it's usually over e-mail or in a conference room, instead of in a seedy bar with several machine-gun-wielding thugs ominously watching the proceedings--but, still, you get the idea. Being able to give something away to get something in return is crucial in business. It’s why McDonald’s frequently partners with movie studios and toy manufacturers to create more value in their Happy Meals--McDonald’s abundant customers and locations are obviously a persuasive draw for the partners. The Bond franchise frequently partners with numerous products as well. In Casino Royale, for instance, the martinis are made by Smirnoff, the car is an Aston Martin, and the camera phone is a Sony Ericsson.
For Bond, the right business deal, whether made by him or an ally, can save his life and the world. For an entrepreneur, the right deal can save anything from time to money, even the company.
Business Lesson 6: Network, network, network. One of the characteristics that makes Bond the world's greatest spy is his expertise at networking. For instance, when Pierce Brosnan’s Bond searches for the missing GoldenEye satellite weapon in GoldenEye, he starts off in St. Petersburg, using a CIA contact to meet Valentin Zukovsky, a Russian mafia leader. In exchange for an arms deal, Zukovsky sets up a meeting in a deserted graveyard in the dead of night with the head of a Russian crime organization called Janus Syndicate, who turns out to be a rogue agent turned bad guy—well, you get the picture.
The point is, whether it’s his close associates like M, Q, Felix or Miss Moneypenny or some far-flung romantic interest or associate he encountered long ago, Bond understands the importance of knowing people, staying in touch and not being afraid to ask for access and information. The same should be true for anyone in business. The chamber of commerce might connect you to someone at the nonprofit organization S.C.O.R.E., which might hook you up with a mentor who ends up finding you an expert in marketing who helps you increase your sales by 25 percent.
Business Lesson 7: Be proactive.“Just get it done,” says Lovas, who believes that the world is split into two halves when it comes to activity: those who are proactive and those who are reactive. “The proactive person jumps right in--fire, ready, aim. The reactive person hesitates and ponders--ready, ready, ready, aim, ready, aim, ready…”
Lovas isn’t making fun of reactive executives or entrepreneurs, necessarily. “The reactives are hesitating because they want to make sure they’re right before they take the action,” explains Lovas. “Bond is an ideal for both sides, because he always takes action, and it’s always the right action.”
Well, almost always, although it always works out for Bond in the end. In the real world--the world of business--we may not have scriptwriters ensuring that we always make the correct decisions, but the Bond method is preferable to dwelling and pondering on strategies for an indeterminable amount of time. Businesses don’t begin, hands aren’t shaken and contracts signed because someone wants a few months to daydream a decision over. Business happens because people make it their business to happen. Be glad James Bond is sticking to humanity on the big screen, instead of invading our corporate world, trying to improve profit margins and customer service. James Bond.
Whatever images you conjure upon hearing those immortal words--world's most dashing spy, ladies’ man with a license to kill, secret agent man with the best gadgets--the phrase "successful product" probably doesn’t come to mind.
But that's exactly what it is. Since 1952, when Ian Fleming published the first Bond book, the British spy has been the focus of novels, the occasional obscure radio and TV production, a few “unofficial” feature films, and 21 movies produced by EON Productions, spearheaded by Barbara Broccoli, who took over the business after her father, Albert ("Cubby"), passed away in 1996. And while Bond may be pure entertainment and a pop icon to most, at the risk of sucking all the joy out of one of Hollywood’s most enduring adventure heroes, he’s no different than Goodyear snow tires or Folgers coffee: Bond is a brand.
He (the character) is also an entrepreneur, at least in spirit. His salary comes from his Majesty’s Secret Service, but on the rare occasion a world scandal erupts, forcing his employer to drop him from payroll, he's worked for himself until he dispatches with the bad guys and gets back in his company’s good graces. He also has a business mindset, frequently networking and making deals, to either prevent himself from getting killed or to save the world.
Entrepreneurs, executives, managers and anyone trying to climb the ladder of success should pay close attention to the tuxedo-clad secret agent. Whether as a product or a person, James Bond has much to teach.
Business Lesson #1:Every product or service reinvents itself--or should.Sure, there are probably exceptions, but generally, even if a product is perfect, “Sometimes you change the packaging,” says customer service guru Paul Kowal of Kowal & Associates Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in customer service call centers.
“Aunt Jemima is probably the classic example,” says Kowal, explaining that while the recipes for the pancake mixes and syrups don’t likely change much from year to year, the visual image of Aunt Jemima “has been updated three or four times over the years to look more appealing to a younger audience.”
The important thing for a business owner to know is how to reinvent oneself--that’s where the James Bond franchise has been very successful. Many fans, for instance, think of Roger Moore’s light-hearted touch as the ultimate Bond; others feel those years were a dark period in the series. Regardless, all the films have had a very successful run because the films follow what could be called the "movement and time formula," says Michael Lovas, founder of AboutPeople, a consulting firm that focuses on helping companies and individuals more thoroughly understand, attract and connect with their A-level clients.
“Movement and time,” says Lovas, repeating the two hallmarks that every entrepreneur should remember when reinventing their product or service. “What stays the same with Bond? Mainly movement,” says Lovas. “Hot chicks, action, danger, gadgets--they’re in every book and film. What changes? Time. Everything's up to date. None of the films are period pieces based in the past.
"In your own business, use the same formula," Lovas suggests. "What needs to remain the same? Movement--quality service, personal touch, quick response. And what changes? Anything that can date your products and services, or show them to be out of date.”
Business Lesson #2: Never forget your core customers.Film producer Barbara Broccoli told IF Magazine that when they were planning this film, they thought a lot about the last film, Die Another Day, and what was wrong with it. While hugely successful, the producers felt it had reached a point where things were getting out of hand--for instance, Bond drove in an invisible car. They wanted to bring the franchise back to the gritty sensibility that the books and, to some extent, the early films had displayed.
“We felt the world had changed,” Broccoli said. “The world was much more serious, and we were trying to figure out where to go.”
Nevertheless, Broccoli didn’t try to completely reinvent Bond, destroying everything that everyone loved about him and completely starting over. And that’s a good thing, as far as Peter Shankman is concerned. Shankman is the CEO of full-service PR firm The Geek Factory, and author of the just released, Can We Do That?! Outrageous PR Stunts That Work—And Why Your Company Needs Them.
“Remember that your fans have made you what you are,” says Shankman, offering advice to any entrepreneur rethinking their product or service. “Never forget about them. When you’re reinventing yourself, do so with them in mind. Bond’s gun might get smaller and more accurate, but he still sleeps with it under his pillow.”
Business Lesson #3:Communicate well--don’t get bogged down in jargon. If you can’t connect with your audience, no matter how much you talk, they’ll never hear you. “Any government agency--whether it's MI5, CIA, FBI or the USMC is steeped in acronyms and cryptic nomenclature,” says Lovas, who thinks a small part of the success of the Bond movies is that they don’t become too steeped in government-speak. "Bond speaks in 'common people' talk.
"In my business--coaching and training financial professionals--we’ve identified 62 words and phrases to never say to a client. They include things like 'split-dollar plan,' 'trustee,' 'unified credit,' 'yield' and 'zero-coupon bond.' "
Lovas says that entrepreneurs should think about the same issues when talking to customers, whether on the phone or through a brochure. “What about you?” he asks. “What terminology confuses your target market?”

source :

http://www.entrepreneur.com/

8 Tech Predictions for 2009 (2)

by Tim Bajarin

5. Smartphones will gain market share. By 2012, 75 percent of all phones sold in the US will be smartphones. Earlier this year sales of cell phones and smartphones grew, but under the current economic climate, sales for the latter part of the year seem stalled. Still, about 1.2 billion cell phones will have been sold worldwide in 2008. They're simply indispensible tools, and in the next 12 months, smartphones such as Apple's iPhone and the RIM BlackBerry will gain a stronger foothold in the U.S. and Europe. By 2015, smartphones will represent as much as 65 percent of all cell phones sold globally.
6. Android will expand its reach. When we talk about Android today, we mostly discuss its role inside a "Google phone" such as the T-Mobile G1. Indeed, in the near term, Android's focus will continue to be smartphones. But by next holiday season we should see it in set-top boxes, digital televisions, and Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs)—and perhaps even desktop terminals. In fact, Android could emerge as the biggest threat to Linux's desire to make the mainstream, and within the next three years Android could become a major OS in its own right.
For this to happen, Google will need to take a Microsoft-like approach to shepherding Android; the SDK needs to be much more solid, and the company needs to drive open-source components in a way that gives Android a consistent UI across all types of devices. And the Mountain View crew needs to take a page from Apple's playbook and create an easy way for people to get Android apps that are tested, approved, and trusted. If that happens, Android could become a most interesting broad-market OS—and could perhaps take on Windows in the future.
7. Apple market share in PCs and smartphones will grow. Even in a downturn, Apple will grow its market share by at least 2 points in 2009. The ease-of-use message and the complete ecosystem are attracting more new customers to Apple stores, and the company will gain new Mac users at the expense of Windows vendors. If Apple delivers a low-cost laptop sometime in 2009, as some rumors have it, its market share could climb even more than 2 points in the coming year. Also, Apple will continue to innovate around the iPhone and even add some models at lower prices to attract new customers worldwide. Apple knows that it is gaining ground on competitors and will use the competition's struggles in the coming year to its own advantage.
And for my outrageous prediction:
8. Microsoft makes a play to purchase RIM. If the Apple iPhone makes any serious inroads into the enterprise, Microsoft will make a bid for RIM and use it to enhance and solidify the company's enterprise smartphone position. Sure, new versions of Windows Mobile will be much richer in the future, but BlackBerry customers are almost as fanatical as Apple users. Microsoft would love to displace BlackBerry phones with Windows Mobile smartphones, and how better to get RIM's customers than by buying the company? Microsoft could then blend RIM into a service, which is where the long-term money will be someday

source :

http://www.pcmag.com

8 Tech Predictions for 2009 (1)

by Tim Bajarin
The current economic crisis makes forecasting much more difficult this year than in the past, yet December still seems like a good time to ponder the year ahead. To that end, I've compiled a list of seven tech predictions—things I believe will happen over the next 12 months, plus one perhaps outrageous bonus prediction that could happen…if the stars align just right next year.
1. Windows 7 will bring tech out of the doldrums. Sales of PCs and other tech will be down in the first half of 2009, but when Microsoft delivers Windows 7 by Q3 (as many expect), it could catalyze the tech economy. This new OS will drive businesses and consumers to new PC and notebook purchases by Q4. Think it's just wishful thinking? In the past when Microsoft delivered a new operating system for mass consumption, sales of PCs and notebooks accelerated dramatically for a period of 24 months. This didn't happen with Vista, but it has happened with many other major releases. Let's hope that history repeats itself.
I'm not alone in this prediction, either; I've talked to several IT directors who confirm this view. Many enterprises balked at buying Vista but are hearing enough good things about Windows 7 to be open to upgrading once it comes out. The big issue will be 2009 budgets, and at the moment, a lot of IT budgets are frozen. Still, IT managers have told me that many of their machines are so old that they have to do some hardware upgrades just to keep their shops competitive.
2. The tech industry will be the first to recover. While the real estate and auto markets will be very slow to come back, the tech industry will recover fastest and be moving forward again by Q3. As stated above, Windows 7 could jump-start things, but technology has become so important to our business and personal lives that the employed will buy new notebooks, music players, and TVs if the economy merely stabilizes sometime in 2009.
3. The unemployed will start small businesses to survive—and will need PCs to make a living. We saw this happen during the last recession and also when some of the big companies downsized. Many of those laid off are professionals who could start specialty consulting services as well as new businesses of various types just to survive. PC technology and communications will most likely be at the heart of their new ventures.
4. Netbook sales will double in 2009. People want cheaper laptops, ones that provide more mobility. Manufacturers should sell about 18 million netbooks this year, and at least another 36 to 38 million worldwide in 2009. These products have driven down the average selling prices of traditional laptops; now full-powered laptops are in the same price range as netbooks. Consequently, users will be faced with a difficult choice when purchasing a notebook in 2009: extreme mobility versus full-powered functionality. But the biggest impact from netbooks will be at the vendor level. These lower-priced models have small margins, and that will impact their profitability in 2009. The drop in revenues will force the major vendors to move faster to create their own ecosystems—hardware, software, and services tied to these netbooks through some type of cloud solution—and use this as a way to develop new revenue streams.

source :
http://www.pcmag.com

Iraqis urge government to free shoe-thrower

From Jomana Karadsheh

CNN

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Protesters across Iraq Tuesday urged government authorities to free the TV correspondent who threw his shoes at President Bush.

Hundreds of students at Diyala University in Baquba carried banners demanding the release of Muntadhar al-Zaidi -- described by demonstrators as an "honorable Iraqi."
Smaller protests emerged in the Anbar province city of Falluja and in two Baghdad locations -- Baghdad University in the northern part of the city and western Baghdad's Ameriya district. In those events, students also took to the streets.
Al-Zaidi threw his shoes at Bush while Bush and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki were holding a Sunday news conference after the president's surprise visit to Baghdad. The journalist was dragged to the ground, hustled out of the room and arrested.
Shouting as he was dragged to the floor, the reporter called his shoe-throwing -- a traditional insult in Arab culture -- a "farewell kiss" to a "dog" who launched the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Watch Muntadhar al-Zaidi throw his shoes at Bush »
Dhirgham al-Zaidi, the shoe-thrower's brother, said the journalist hated the "material American occupation" and Iranian influence in Iraq.
Asked about the incident by CNN's Candy Crowley, Bush said, "I didn't have much time to reflect on anything. I was ducking and dodging."
He said the journalist was "looking for notoriety" and that authorities shouldn't overreact in their treatment of him.

TV networks across the world continue to air the shoe-throwing scene, which has touched a nerve in the Arab world, where there has been an outpouring of support for al-Zaidi -- a correspondent for the Egyptian-based Al-Baghdadia TV.
The network, which has been airing rolling live coverage about the incident, is urging his release and has invited guests who support him into its studio.

Its crawls include messages of support from Iraqis and foreigners. Iraqis have been receiving short text messages of support on their cell phones, and some of the notes are short poems.

Al-Baghdadia reported Tuesday al-Zaidi called one of his brothers and said he was in the custody of judicial authorities and will appear Wednesday in Baghdad's Central Criminal Court.
